OUR SOULS LOOK BACK AND WONDER
HOW WE GOT OVER
THE HUNTINGTON CHURCH OF CHRIST was established in 1959 by Bro. H.L. Farris. A handful of members began meeting in a house on Depot Road in Huntington Station. Bro. Farris worked with the congregation until 1966. During these years, the church grew, and under his leadership, money was raised for the purchase of property. Eventually, the small group of believer’s were able to secure a mortgage and erect the present church edifice. From 1966 to 1968, Bro. Moses Johnson and Bro. Darrell Ramsey worked together and shared ministerial duties in the congregation. In 1968, Bro. Howard Wright, and his wife, Claudine, moved to Long Island, after graduating from Harding University, Searcy, Arkansas. They began working with the Huntington Church of Christ, and have been faithfully doing so for 20 years. The attendance grew from 75 people to a peak of over 225 worshippers and well over 350 members. The contribution increased from $150.00 weekly to a $2300.00 per week budget.
In 1978, under the leadership of Bro. Wright, the Huntington Church of Christ launched a successful Building Fund Drive with plans to add an Educational Complex. This cooperative effort, which materialized into $15,000.00 seed money, enabled the church to liquidate the mortgage on the church edifice, secure the services of an architect, and gain the momentum for a Building Fund Program. Little did we know at the time that the launching of that drive would result in a new $700,000.00 Educational Complex. Between 1979 and 1982, the leadership pursued some other avenues of expansion, including the purchase of an elementary school on 17 acres of land. But due to inflation, tight money, and unemployment in a recessionary economy, the plans were put on the shelf. But the VISION of seeing this much needed Sunday School Addition either purchased or erected, NEVER DIED. On many occasions, Bro. Wright would say, “CHURCH, LOOK OUT THERE AND SEE THE VISION!” At other times, we would hear Bro. Wright saying, in the immortal words of Caleb, “LORD, GIVE ME THIS MOUNTAIN!” The LORD presented the congregation with a great open door to achieve this goal. As a result of two bond issues, pledges and sacrifices from the members, the sale of the church parsonage, and a little help from our friends, the Huntington Church of Christ has come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord.
In June of 1985, we were motivated to reach higher heights by participating in an official Ground Breaking Ceremony, at which time we honored members of the Huntington congregation for 20 years’ service or more with an award plaque. And in October of 1988, we received the coveted Certificate of Occupancy, which allowed us to officially enter the new Educational Complex. The church had to overcome numerous road blocks, hurdles, and stumbling blocks. But WE MADE CHARIOT WHEELS OUT OF OUR DIFFICULTIES AND RODE THEM ON TO SUCCESS! The members of this great church rose up to meet every challenge presented to them. Many members, both deceased and living, have contributed to the growth and development of the Huntington congregation. It would serve as an injustice to attempt to list all of their names. But God acknowledges and rewards their loving contributions. From a house on Depot Road, to a house on Broadway, to a structure and property worth $2,000,000.00. The lord has brought us from a might long way. HELLO! Figuratively, emotionally, and spiritually, OUR SOULS LOOK BACK AND WONDER HOW WE GOT OVER!
